*This is a self-contained module from the “Beyond the Protocol” workshop, a comprehensive workshop on PFA and SBT.

Course Abstract: This module covers how SBT implementation and supervision adapt across clinic and home settings, and how telehealth changes what oversight requires. Participants learn the distinct advantages and challenges of each context: the clinic’s control, resources, and training opportunities against its generalization gap, and the home’s naturalistic reinforcers and easier generalization against its reduced control, family-values considerations, and limited supervision. The telehealth portion covers coaching a lone implementer remotely, including bug-in-ear coaching, camera and technology setup, conservative safety planning, and how to make short, spread-out consults effective. Throughout, the emphasis is on the clinician’s own role and boundaries in each context, and on building alignment and relationships wherever the work happens to produce the most effective results regardless of setting.

Learning Objectives: By the end of this course, participants will be able to…

• Describe how the core SBT model stays constant while environmental control, supervision, safety planning, and generalization needs adapt across settings
• Identify the advantages and challenges of clinic-based implementation and plan for its generalization gap, staff training opportunities, and supervision structure
• Identify the advantages and challenges of home-based implementation, including respecting family values and routines, targeting meaningful branches for buy-in, and home-specific safety planning
• Adapt supervision for telehealth, including bug-in-ear coaching, technology and camera setup, conservative safety planning, and structuring brief, frequent consults
• Describe the clinician’s own role and boundaries in each context and how to build alignment with families and staff

Presenter Bio:

Dr. Edward Sanabria, Ph.D, BCBA, LBA designed and implemented large-scale PFA/SBT mentorship systems that trained clinicians across the country in assessment and treatment approaches that prioritize client safety, dignity, and assent. His research interests in interdisciplinary collaboration, reflective practice, and the large-scale adoption of behavioral interventions inform his approach to helping practitioners develop humility-driven clinical practices that build strong therapeutic relationships. He currently serves as Senior Director of Functional Analysis and Treatment Implementation at Centria Autism, where he oversees national assent-based care training initiatives and PFA/SBT mentorship.
