“Consent and Assent – Do you have it?” offers 3 ethics CEUs and discusses factors involved in a therapeutic relationship. Identifies behaviors associated with assent withdrawal, an assent withdrawal decision tree and the BACB ethical codes involved in assent based programming. Your instructors are Hillary Laney, Josh Fearing, Megan DeLeon Miller, Katy Thomas and Rosalie Prendergast.

About Your Presenters…

Hillary Laney, BCBA, is passionate about providing services to clients with significant behavioral needs which prioritizes dignity, safety, rapport, and assent. She received her M. Ed from the University of Washington and has extensive experience as a practitioner and in supporting practitioners, agencies, and schools to provide more comprehensive services to those who need them most. Hillary currently serves as the Vice President of Functional Assessment and Treatment at Centria Autism. She is responsible for staff development and training oversight across the agency in the implementation of assent-based interventions including; Universal Protocols, Practical Functional Assessment, and Skill-Based Treatment. In the past year, Hillary has overseen the training of over 300 supervising clinicians and her team has supported over 300 successful Practical Functional Assessments. In her free time, she volunteers moderating the PFA & SBT Community, an online group of over 20,000 members, which provides free content for members to learn and grow in assent-based practice.  

Josh Fearing is a BCBA who was been volunteering, working with and learning from people with disabilities for over 15 years. Josh volunteered with students with disabilities while in Junior High, and followed that joy and passion to pursue a career in Special Education. Before becoming a BCBA, Josh taught students with intellectual disabilities in middle and high school, and worked in the field of advocacy. As a BCBA, Josh is passionate about meeting clients where they are, focusing on unique wants and needs, and preparing students for full and independent lives.

Dr. Megan DeLeon Miller is the creator of the Do Better Movement and founder of the Do Better Collective. Megan earned her Ph.D. in Special Education and Behavior Analysis at The Ohio State University in 2015. Dr. DeLeon Miller’s early training in behavior analysis occurred at the Cleveland Clinic Center for Autism as a volunteer/intern in 2003. Dr. DeLeon Miller has taught courses in behavior analysis and special education as an adjunct professor for several universities. She has co-authored journal articles published in the Journal of Developmental Physical Disability, Behavior Analysis in Practice, and Teaching Exceptional Children. She also co-authored “The 7 Steps to Earning Instructional Control” with Robert Schramm, BCBA. Megan regularly presents to professional organizations around the globe as an invited speaker. In 2018, Dr. DeLeon Miller started the #dobetter professional development movement to improve access to training in best practices in the field of behavior analysis via an online community, webinars, and a podcast.

Katy Thomas, BCBA

Rosalie Prendergast, MS BCBA has worked with children with disabilities since the age of 12. A long-time equestrian, she began her journey helping children using equine therapy. Rosalie focused on that journey when she obtained a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of Northern Colorado, concentrating on Art, Human Rehabilitation services, Special Education, and Psychology. In 2009 she graduated from Nova Southeastern University with a Masters degree in Counseling and Advanced Behavior Analysis and became a Board Certified Behavior Analyst.  She strives to enhance the lives of all the individuals she works with through increasing their access to meaningful participation in all areas of their life.

Learning objectives

Participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the difference between consent and assent
  2. Define the difference between compliance and cooperation
  3. Identify factors involved with building a therapeutic relationship
  4. Identify competing contingencies regarding assent using the shared purpose matrix
  5. Define the importance of choice
  6. Identify the BACB ethical code regarding assent, cultural responsiveness, awareness of personal biases, coercive and exploitative relationships, involving clients and stakeholders, continual evaluation of the behavior, providing effective treatment, responsibility to clients
  7. Discriminate between compliance, assent and assent withdrawal
  8. Define objective behaviors associated with assent withdrawal
  9. Identify the 6 foundational skills of DNA-V
  10. Identify the steps of the assent withdrawal decision tree
